The map displayed on this site is a visualisation of criminal activity in the German capital. The data used to create it was taken from the Berlin Atlas of Crime, a report biennially published by the police of the Federal State of Berlin, the last report to date taken in August 2012.
This most recent report covers the criminal activity for the years 2010 and 2011 for every district and locality in the city of Berlin.
The data available on this site is an excerpt from the official dataset. It shows the amount of criminal activity for specific types of crime for the year 2011. Population data was taken from the official population statistics in the office of statistics Berlin/Brandenburg for the 4th quarter of 2011.
The heatmap for selected types of crime displays either the absolute amount of criminal activity or an adjusted value, which takes the local population into account. In the latter case the values are computed by the following formula: (crime rate * 100.000) / localites population
The visualisation of the Berlin Atlas of crime was created by Tobias Burri and Lars Bullmann.
